Durian is known as the "King of Fruits, and within the Southeast Asian region it's generally understood that the very best durian is grown in Thailand. The fruit is harvested in May/June and fetches a relatively high price. While growing, durian trees consume a great deal of water. Durian is usually farmed in the southeastern part of Thailand. Durian is a large, heavy fruit covered with pointy spikes (see photos below). Opening the durian reveals two golden "pillows" of fruit inside, this is eaten fresh. It's full of vitamins and minerals, and the fruit has a very strong pungent odor that some say is like a cat's litterbox. Durian is often forbidden in hotels and air-conditioned public transport because of the strong, pungent, offensive smell, but the taste of this fruit is another matter altogether. Durian tastes great! If you haven't tried it, be sure to do so when you get a chance.
